about

This is a song about trying to grow up faster than you should. I believed I knew how things worked and I was just ready to go out and take it all on, and there is a naivete in that, and I believe that the world can take advantage of people like that.

We were trying to channel Neil Young’s “The Birds” with this song, as well as Joni Mitchell’s “Blue”. We were going to add harmonies and strings, but then the song just seemed to stand so strongly on it’s own, that I thought I owed it the song to leave it. It also represents this album being a return to my roots, with stripped-down songwriting and live-off-the-floor recording process.

This is also the first mix that Producer, Ross Hayes Citrullo sent me from the record, and when I heard it I just cried because I felt like he understood what this album was about, and I was so excited and so grateful to be working with someone that could connect to my vision. That’s why we decided to release this first! Even though it’s the most stripped-down, simple song on the record, it’s the one where it’s really just me and the song, with nothing to hide behind, and I love that.

lyrics

The City
Thought that I knew the ways of the city
Concrete and sidewalks they always find their way into my thoughts
Thought that I knew the ways of the city
But I was never 18 and never unseen by the thunder
City lights don’t phase you no you take it like you see
Driving yourself crazy trying to believe
It’s only a phone call but it feels like demons at your door
Somethings gotta give
It’ll all make sense someday
Thought that I knew the ways of the city
Concrete and sidewalks they always find their way into my thoughts
Thought that I knew the ways of the city
But i was never 18 and never unseen by the thunder
Twisting sidewalks trying to take this trouble outta me
Landing on the same street everytime
Where the vampires seem to live and breathe
They wear me down
Sweet talk the dark things
Something’s gotta give
It’ll all make sense it’ll all make sense someday
Thought that I knew the ways of the city
Concrete and sidewalks they always find their way into my thoughts
Thought that I knew the ways of the city
But I was never 18 and never unseen by the thunder
Say what you will
Every time I don’t think twice I rush in blind like a fool
Say what you will
Do you call this living
Do you call this living
Do you call this living
Thought that I knew the ways of the city
Concrete and sidewalks they always find their way into my thoughts
Thought that I knew the ways of the city
But I was never 18 and never unseen by the sunrise

about

Sandra Bouza Toronto, Ontario

Most of the music we listen to never really gets under our skin. As pleasant and catchy as it may be, it skims along the surface, like a stone skipping across water. Every now and then, if we are really lucky, we encounter an artist like Sandra Bouza who gets right down into our blood and bones. An artist whose voice stops us in our tracks. ... more
